Bring your tired sofa back to life
Your sofa takes more daily wear than almost anything else in your home. Skin cells, body oils, pet hair, food crumbs and dust all work their way deep into the fabric, often without it being obvious from the surface. A quick vacuum helps, but it can only reach so far.
That's where I come in. I'm Michelle Brooks, and I've been reviving furniture across Hemel Hempstead and Hertfordshire for over 20 years. I use specialist upholstery equipment and fabric-safe solutions to clean deep into the fibres, so your sofa looks fresher, smells cleaner and feels genuinely soft again, not just tidied up on top.
What to expect on the day
A careful, fabric-first approach from start to finish. Here's how a Carpet Glow sofa clean works.
-
Fabric check and test patch
Michelle checks the manufacturer's cleaning code and fabric type, tests a hidden area first, and flags anything to be aware of before any cleaning starts.
-
Pre-treatment of the well-used spots
The arms, headrests and seat cushions take the most wear, so these greasier areas are pre-treated to loosen body oils, food residue and general grime.
-
Fabric-safe deep clean
Specialist upholstery equipment lifts dirt, dust mites and odour out of the fibres using fabric-safe solutions, cleaning deep without soaking the padding.
-
Spot and odour treatment
Stubborn marks get a second pass, and deodoriser tackles pet and everyday smells rather than just covering them up.
-
Grooming and drying
The fabric is groomed and left to dry, usually within a few hours with the windows open. Michelle will let you know when it's ready to use again.
Which sofa fabrics can be cleaned?
Carpet Glow cleans fabric sofas only, not leather. Most fabric sofas clean up beautifully, but not every material can be wet-cleaned. Michelle always checks the fabric and its cleaning code first, and will be honest if yours needs a different approach.
Most fabric sofas
Polyester, cotton blends, microfibre and chenille clean up beautifully with a fabric-safe deep clean.
Delicate fabrics
Velvet, linen and some viscose need a gentler, adjusted approach, so Michelle always tests a hidden area first.
What can't be wet-cleaned
Some fabrics carry an 'S' code (solvent-only) or 'X' code (vacuum-only). Michelle will tell you honestly if yours is one of these rather than risk your sofa.

Sofa stains and smells: what to expect
Most marks and odours improve a great deal, but honesty comes first. Some old, set-in stains may lighten rather than disappear, and Michelle will always tell you before she starts.
- Food & drink spills Usually removable
Everyday spills on the seats and arms lift out well with pre-treatment.
- Body oils & hair product Usually removable
The greasy sheen that builds up on headrests and arms is exactly what a deep clean removes.
- Pet hair & odour Often improves
Hair is lifted out and odours greatly reduced. Deeply set-in pet smell may need a repeat treatment.
- Old set-in stains Often improves
These usually lighten noticeably but may not vanish completely. Michelle will tell you before she starts.
- Ink (ballpoint) Varies
Some fresh ink responds. Older or heavy ink may only lighten rather than disappear.
Why professional sofa cleaning is worth it
- Sofas take more daily wear than almost anything else in your home, building up skin cells, body oils, food residue and dust deep in the fabric.
- A deep clean lifts out the dust mites and allergens that settle into upholstery, which is better for anyone with asthma or allergies.
- Removing ground-in grime and body oils helps your sofa look fresher and last longer, protecting an expensive piece of furniture.
- Odours from pets, cooking and everyday life are drawn out rather than masked, leaving the whole room smelling cleaner.
- Family- and pet-safe solutions throughout, with honest advice on when the sofa is ready to use again.

I cannot speak too highly of Michelle’s services. Prior to her visit we had tried everything to remove pet stains without success and were looking to replace the carpets. This is no longer necessary. On top of all that she is a really nice person to deal with.

Frequently asked questions about sofa cleaning
How long does professional sofa cleaning take?
Most sofas take between 45 minutes and 90 minutes depending on the size and condition. A large corner suite may take a little longer. Michelle will give you a realistic time estimate when you book.
How long does a sofa take to dry after cleaning?
Usually between two and four hours, depending on the fabric type and ventilation in the room. Opening windows and doors helps speed things up. Michelle uses equipment that removes as much moisture as possible during the clean, so drying times are kept to a minimum.
Is sofa cleaning safe for my fabric?
Yes. Before starting, Michelle inspects the fabric and checks the manufacturer's cleaning code to make sure the right method and solutions are used for your sofa. She will always let you know if she has any concerns before starting work.
Can you remove all stains from a sofa?
Most stains can be significantly improved or removed entirely. Some older, set-in stains or certain types of dye transfer may not come out completely, but Michelle will always be honest about what to expect before she starts. She will always do her very best.
Is sofa cleaning safe for children and pets?
Absolutely. The cleaning solutions Michelle uses are safe for families and pets. She can advise on how soon you can use the sofa again after cleaning — in most cases, it is just a matter of hours.
What types of furniture can you clean?
Michelle cleans fabric sofas, corner suites, armchairs, dining chairs, footstools and ottomans. If you are not sure whether she can help with a specific item, just get in touch and she will let you know.
Will cleaning leave my sofa soaking wet?
No. The equipment extracts most of the moisture as it cleans, so your sofa is left slightly damp rather than soaked and usually dries within a few hours with good ventilation.
Do you clean leather sofas?
No, Carpet Glow cleans fabric upholstery only, not leather. If you have a fabric sofa, corner suite or armchair, Michelle would be glad to help. Just send a photo and she'll confirm.
