Professional Upholstery Cleaning in Hemel Hempstead

Expert cleaning for sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, curtains and mattresses, from a trusted local professional.

Tired sofas, grubby armchairs, and mystery stains — this is exactly what I do.

You know that moment when you really look at your sofa? Not just glance at it, but actually look — and realise it’s been carrying the evidence of family life for rather longer than you’d like to admit. Pet hair worked into every cushion seam. A stain you’ve been strategically placing a throw over for three months. Fabric that used to feel soft and now just feels… tired.
That’s where I come in.

I’m Michelle Brooks, and I’ve been bringing furniture back to life for over 20 years. Based in Hemel Hempstead, I provide professional upholstery cleaning for homes across Hertfordshire — including Kings Langley, Apsley, Bedmond, Sarratt and the surrounding villages. Every job is done by me personally, using professional-grade equipment and cleaning solutions that are safe for your family, your pets, and your furniture. I also offer professional carpet cleaning too

No call centres. No rotating technicians. Just Michelle — turning up on time, doing the job properly, and leaving your home cleaner than she found it.

What types of upholstery do we clean?

Most people think of sofas first — and yes, I clean a lot of sofas. But upholstery cleaning covers far more than that. Here’s what I work with regularly:

Sofas and corner units — fabric and leather, from two-seaters to the full family corner sofa that’s seen better days. I clean all sizes and configurations, including those awkward modular sets where cushions go everywhere.

Armchairs and recliners — often the most used piece of furniture in the house, and usually the most overlooked when it comes to cleaning. A professional clean makes a remarkable difference.

Dining chairs — fabric dining chairs are magnets for food spills, grease, and general daily use. A set of six grimy dining chairs can look completely fresh after a proper clean.

Mattresses — we spend a third of our lives in bed, and mattresses absorb far more than most people realise. A professional mattress clean removes dust mites, odours, and built-up residue for a genuinely cleaner sleep environment.

Cushions, headboards, and footstools — the finishing touches that often get forgotten, but make a big difference to how fresh a room feels overall.

If you’re not sure whether I can help with something specific, just give me a call. I’m always happy to talk it through.

How does professional upholstery cleaning actually work?

It’s a fair question — and one I get asked a lot. Here’s what a typical visit looks like.

Before I start, I’ll assess the fabric type and condition, check for any existing damage or particularly stubborn staining, and confirm the best approach for your specific upholstery. I’ll always be honest about what’s achievable — if a stain is old or set in, I’ll tell you upfront rather than let you down afterwards.

Then I get to work. For most fabric upholstery, I use a hot water extraction method — the same professional-grade process used for carpet cleaning, adapted for furniture. It draws out dirt, allergens, and bacteria from deep within the fibres, rather than just treating the surface. The result is genuinely clean upholstery, not just upholstery that looks clean for a week.

For delicate fabrics — velvet, linen, some wool blends — I adapt the method accordingly. I’ll always test a small, discreet area first so you can see exactly how the fabric responds before I clean the whole piece.
After cleaning, I can apply a stain protection treatment if you’d like. It creates an invisible barrier that helps repel future spills and makes day-to-day maintenance much easier. Particularly worth considering if you have children or pets.

Drying time is usually two to four hours, depending on fabric weight and ventilation. I’ll always advise you on the best way to speed that up — usually as simple as keeping windows open and the heating on.

Upholstery cleaning across Hemel Hempstead and Hertfordshire

I’m based in Hemel Hempstead and cover the local area thoroughly. Whether you’re in the heart of town or out in one of the surrounding villages, the chances are I’m already working nearby.

Regular areas I cover include Kings Langley, Apsley, Bedmond, Sarratt, Watford, Rickmansworth and the wider Hertfordshire area. If you’re not sure whether I cover your postcode, just give me a call — I’ll tell you straight away.

One thing I hear a lot from customers in the villages is that they struggle to find a local cleaner who’ll come out to them without charging a fortune in travel. That’s never been the way I work. If you’re in my area, you’re treated exactly the same as anyone else.

Frequently asked questions about upholstery cleaning

How do I know if my fabric is safe to clean professionally?
Most fabrics are perfectly safe for professional cleaning — cotton, polyester, microfibre, velvet, linen, and most wool blends. I always check the care label and test a small area before cleaning. If there’s any doubt about suitability, I’ll tell you before I start.
Yes — this is one of the most common jobs I do. Pet hair embedded in fabric, and the odours that come with it, respond really well to professional cleaning. If your home has pets, mention it when you get in touch and I’ll make sure I come prepared.
This is a natural concern, especially with brighter or darker fabrics. I test a hidden area first on every job. In 20 years, I’ve never had a customer whose fabric was damaged by cleaning — but I take precautions every time regardless.
Just move any small items off the furniture — throws, cushions, ornaments. You don’t need to move the furniture itself. I’ll work around everything else.
For most households, once a year is ideal. Homes with pets, young children, or allergy sufferers often benefit from twice-yearly cleaning. I’m happy to recommend a schedule that makes sense for your home.

Prices vary depending on the size and number of pieces. A single armchair starts from around £35. A standard three-seater sofa is typically £60–£80. I always provide a clear, no-obligation quote before I start — no hidden charges, no surprises. Visit the pricing page for a full guide, or just give me a call.
