Tired sofas, grubby armchairs and mystery stains: this is exactly what I do
You know that moment when you really look at your furniture? Not just glance at it, but actually look, and realise it's been carrying the evidence of family life for rather longer than you'd like to admit. Pet hair worked into every cushion seam. A stain you've been strategically covering with a throw for three months. Fabric that used to feel soft and now just feels tired.
That's where I come in. I'm Michelle Brooks, and I've been bringing furniture back to life for over 20 years. Based in Hemel Hempstead, I provide professional upholstery cleaning for homes across Hertfordshire, including Kings Langley, Apsley, Bedmond, Sarratt and the surrounding villages. Every job is done by me personally, using professional-grade equipment and solutions that are safe for your family, your pets and your furniture.
No call centres. No rotating technicians. Just Michelle, turning up on time, doing the job properly, and leaving your home cleaner than she found it.
What types of upholstery do we clean?
Most people think of sofas first, and yes, I clean a lot of sofas. But upholstery cleaning covers far more than that. Here's what I work with regularly:
Sofas and corner suites
Fabric sofas from two-seaters to the full family corner suite. For sofas specifically, see our dedicated sofa cleaning page.
Sofa cleaningArmchairs and recliners
Often the most used seat in the house, and usually the most overlooked. A professional clean makes a remarkable difference.
Dining chairs
Fabric dining chairs are magnets for food spills, grease and daily use. A set of six grimy chairs can look completely fresh again.
Footstools & cushions
The finishing touches that often get forgotten, but make a big difference to how fresh a room feels overall.
If you're not sure whether I can help with something specific, just give me a call. I'm always happy to talk it through.
What to expect on the day
A careful, fabric-first approach whatever I'm cleaning. Here's how an upholstery clean works from start to finish.
-
Assessment and fabric check
Michelle checks each item's fabric and cleaning code, tests a hidden area first, and gives you an honest view of what's achievable before any cleaning starts.
-
Pre-treatment of the grimiest areas
Arms, seats, headrests and edges take the most wear, so these areas are pre-treated to loosen body oils, food residue and general soiling.
-
Fabric-safe deep clean
A professional deep clean lifts dirt, dust mites and odour out of the fibres, adapted to suit delicate fabrics wherever needed.
-
Spot and odour treatment
Stubborn marks get individual attention, and deodoriser tackles pet and everyday smells rather than just covering them.
-
Grooming and drying
Each piece is groomed and left to dry, usually within a few hours with good ventilation. Michelle will tell you when it's ready to use.
How does professional upholstery cleaning actually work?
It's a fair question, and one I get asked a lot. Before I start, I'll assess the fabric type and condition, check for any existing damage or particularly stubborn staining, and confirm the best approach for your specific upholstery. I'll always be honest about what's achievable: if a stain is old or set in, I'll tell you upfront rather than let you down afterwards.
I clean fabric upholstery only, not leather. For most fabrics, I use a professional-grade deep clean that draws out dirt, allergens and bacteria from deep within the fibres, rather than just treating the surface. For delicate fabrics like velvet, linen and some wool blends, I adapt the approach accordingly, and always test a small, discreet area first.
Drying time is usually two to four hours, depending on the fabric weight and ventilation, and I'll always let you know when it's safe to use your furniture again.
Why professional upholstery cleaning is worth it
- Soft furnishings quietly absorb skin cells, body oils, dust and allergens every day, well beyond what a vacuum can reach.
- A deep clean reduces the dust mites and allergens trapped in upholstery, which helps anyone in the home with asthma or allergies.
- Lifting out ground-in grime keeps chairs and sofas looking fresher and lasting longer.
- Odours from pets, cooking and everyday life are drawn out rather than masked.
- Family- and pet-safe solutions throughout, and every job is done personally by Michelle.

What's included in an upholstery clean?
Every clean is tailored to the item and its fabric, but a typical visit includes:
- A careful inspection of the fabric and any marks or stains
- A gentle pre-treatment suited to your upholstery's material
- Deep but fabric-safe cleaning
- Deodorising to freshen sofas, chairs and soft furnishings
- Honest advice on care between cleans
Before Michelle arrives
- Give each piece a quick vacuum if you can, including the seams and crevices.
- Clear ornaments, remotes and loose items from around the furniture.
- Point out any specific stains or smells you'd like Michelle to focus on.
- Keep pets and children clear of the room while she works.
Drying and aftercare
- Keep the room ventilated to speed up drying, usually a few hours.
- Wait until the fabric is fully dry before use, and before replacing cushions or throws.
- Give the room good ventilation to help everything dry evenly.
Clear, honest upholstery prices
Upholstery cleaning starts from £25 for an armchair, with sofas, dining chairs and corner suites all quoted clearly up front. Send Michelle a photo and she'll confirm the exact price the same day, with no hidden charges.

Frequently asked questions about upholstery cleaning
What types of upholstery can you clean?
Michelle cleans sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, corner suites, ottomans and most soft furnishings. She'll always check the fabric first and choose a method that's safe for the material.
How long does upholstery take to dry?
Typically two to four hours, though thicker fabrics can take a little longer. Good ventilation helps it dry faster.
Will cleaning damage or shrink my sofa fabric?
No. Michelle tests an inconspicuous area first and adjusts the method to suit the fabric, cleaning thoroughly without over-wetting.
Can you remove pet smells and stains from upholstery?
In most cases, yes. Deep extraction cleaning plus deodorising lifts odours and marks, though very old or set-in stains may not come out completely. Michelle will be honest about what to expect.
Is upholstery cleaning safe for children and pets?
Yes. The solutions used are family- and pet-friendly, and Michelle can advise on how soon it's fine to use the furniture again.
Do you clean dining chairs and armchairs?
Yes. Fabric dining chairs, armchairs, footstools and other soft furnishings are all part of what Michelle cleans. A tired set of dining chairs can look completely fresh after a proper clean.
